Electoral Register

Categories of Elector

The Register comprises four categories of electors. A person's citizenship determines their category and the type of elections at which they may vote as in the table below:

Election and Referendum Information Leaflets

These are available on the Department’s website at http://www.housing.gov.ie/local-government/voting/voting. There is a Section listing the various leaflets.

Local & European Elections

Mr Phil Hogan T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has announced that the Government has agreed that the European Parliament and Local Elections will be held on Friday the 23rd May 2014. Polling will be between the hours of 7am and 10pm on that day.

Postal & Special Voter Applications

Closing date for receipt of Postal & Special Voters Applications for the 2017/2018 Register of Electors is the 25th November 2016. Once approved, a Postal vote is applicable for the duration of the Register i.e. 12 months from the 15th February 2017.

Notice is hereby given that the Register of Electors for 2017/2018 was published on the 01st February, 2017 and will come into force on the 15th February, 2017. The Register of Electors is available for inspection at Council Offices, Garda Stations, Post Offices and Libraries.

Revised Polling Scheme 2016

Statutory Provisions

The statutory provisions relating to the qualifications for registration as electors are contained in the Electoral Act 1992 and are summarised as follow:

18 years or over on 15th February in the year in which the Register comes into force (i.e. 15th February 2017 to qualify for entry onto the 2017/2018 Register)

Two Versions of the Register

Since 2004, registration authorities are required to publish two versions of the register the full register and the edited register.

Register of Electors

The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote and can only be used for an electoral or other statutory purpose.
