Broadband

Broadband in Tipperary- An Introduction

The term 'broadband' refers to internet access. Broadband connectivity is of great importance for growth, innovation, social cohesion and is fast becoming a necessity of everyday life in Ireland.

The National Broadband Plan (NBP)

The Department published the National Broadband Plan (NBP) in August 2012. This is a Government wide initiative to deliver high speed broadband services to all businesses and households in Ireland. The NBP defines high speed broadband as a minimum speed of 30Mbps download and 6Mbps upload.

This is being achieved through a combination of:

NBP State Intervention

The State Intervention Strategy sets out the Government's approach to ensure that High Speed Broadband is made available to all households and businesses in the country where there is no existing or planned commercial network. This non-commercial High Speed Broadband area is known as "The Intervention Area".

Commercial Investment

A key principle of the National Broadband Plan is to support and stimulate commercial investment through policy and regulatory measures. This has acted as a catalyst to commercial investment by the telecommunications sector.

NBP - The Procurement Process

The State has committed to intervene and subsidise the building of a new high speed broadband network in areas of the country where there is no existing or planned commercial high speed broadband.
The Intervention Area is identified as AMBER on the High Speed Broadband map.

NBP - Environmental Assessments

The Department ran a public consultation on the National Broadband Plan - Intervention Strategy: Strategic Environmental Assessment Scoping Report. This consultation closed on Friday 20th May 2016 - for further information, click the above link.

Infrastructure Sharing

By re-using existing telecoms infrastructure such as poles, ducts, sites and masts, the cost of the intervention to the State will be minimised. This will avoid unnecessary new build. To facilitate this, the Department has set up a Register of Infrastructure Owners.
