The Strategic Projects Unit (SPU) was set up in October 2014 within the Community & Economic Development Directorate of Tipperary County Council (TCC).
The Local Government Reform Act, 2014 provided for the reconfiguration of regional structures by abolishing the eight regional authorities, including the South-East Regional Authority (SERA) and the Mid West Regional Authority (MWRA) with effect from 1st June 2014 and replacing them with three new regional assemblies.
At that time, the SERA and the MWRA transferred their portofolios of EU co-financed projects to TCC. The staff of the SPU has seen these projects out to completion and is now working on a number of new EU co-financed projects. It is also the role of the SPU staff to seek out funding and collaborative opportunities and to prepare and/or coordinate preparation of proposals/bids in response to appropriate Calls for Proposals; generally, this is done in cooperation with regional and local partners, e.g. other local authorities, HEIs, enterprise support agencies, Youthwork Ireland Tipperary, Energy Agencies, Fáilte Ireland, Chambers of Commerce etc.
