Local Authorities have wide ranging powers and responsibilities to stop and prevent water pollution, including:

  • Licensing of discharges to surface waters from industrial, commercial and domestic activities
  • Pollution investigations
  • Farm inspections
  • Domestic wastewater treatment systems (septic tanks and other treatment systems)

Farm Inspections

Tipperary County Council carry out farm inspections for the following reasons:

Water Pollution Licences Issued by Tipperary County Council

Discharges to Surface Waters – Section 4 licences

Activities discharging wastewater directly to a river require a licence, in accordance with Section 4 of the Local Government (Water Pollution) Acts, 1977 – 2007. Before issuing a licence Tipperary County Council must be satisfied that the wastewater is adequately treated and will not cause water pollution.
