Tipperary County Council has compiled a Repair & Reuse Directory to list all service providers in County Tipperary that offer repair and reuse services as part of a waste prevention initiative. It is an effort to encourage people to repair or reuse items rather than throw them away.
To ensure the directory represents as many local repair outlets as possible, the Council sought assistance from the public to compile the list of local businesses/repair people. The objective of having the Repair Directory is to enable people to know who is available locally that can repair items.
The Repair Directory which is in booklet format will be made available in our public offices and libraries. This was also distributed through local community groups such as Tidy Towns/Community Groups.
Tipperary County Council wants to support and expand the existing repair economy in County Tipperary as this is a growing sector offering opportunities for local employment. The Environment Section, who put the directory together stated that “repairing and reusing products is not only good for the environment as it saves resources and prevents waste but it is also good for the local economy as jobs in the repair industry tend to be local.”
Repairs relating to shoes, clothes alterations, electrical repairs to home appliances, furniture repairs, computer repairs, mobile phone repairs, clock and watch repairs are typical repair services but if you can think of others, please include them. All that is needed is the business name, address and contact phone number and details on the type of service they provide.
We want to get people of Tipperary thinking creatively about reusing what they have rather than throw away. In collaboration with Environmental Protection Agency and Environment and Climate Action Section are launching its first ever Repair Directory.
So why is it important that we reuse old materials or turn them into something else? Reusing has numerous environmental benefits. It helps to save energy, limits pollution, conserves natural resources and also reduces greenhouse gases emission.
We’re challenging people to use their imagination and create something new out of something old…to breathe new life into an old or unwanted item or material.
So if you can find something old and renovate it or turn it into something completely different but still usable, then we want to see it! Whether it's painting an old piece of furniture, decorating a wine bottle to use as a candlestick holder - whatever it is, we want to see it given a second life.
It is very important that we reuse old materials or turn them into something else? By using Repair Directory, reusing has numerous environmental benefits. It helps to save energy, limits pollution, conserves natural resources and also reduces greenhouse gases emissions.

The Up cycle Challenge is brought to you by Environmental Protection Agency and Environment and Climate Action, Tipperary County Council where our goal is to promote the idea that we all need to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Get your thinking cap on and hunt out something old or unwanted that you could up-cycle. Think of that chair that would look better painted or that teddy that you could repair. Anything is possible! Maybe get the kids involved.
We want people to be resourceful by reusing, reducing and recycling. Think outside the box, it could be an idea that has been simmering away in your head to upcycle or to breath new life into an old or unwanted item.
Think about the tools and materials you intend to use for project, and commence putting list of things to put your masterpiece together.
Now is your time to shine and become the influencer you have always wanted to be. Your contribution is promoting reusing, reducing and recycling. Please take a before photo and an after photo of your upcycled piece, we want to see all products used in this project.
