2nd October 2020 UPDATE – N52 Borrisokane Culvert Works & Traffic Management

We would like to update you on progress to the Culvert repairs, which necessitated a road closure on the N52 Birr Road. The collapsed section of the Culvert has now been repaired by installing pre-cast concrete pipes and backfilling around and over the pipe with concrete. A reinforced concrete protective slab has also been cast over the original culvert and the repaired section to alleviate the risk of future damage.

Following discussions with a number of stakeholders it has been decided to extend the road closure for a maximum period of two weeks, as it is anticipated this will help to speed up the kerbing, footpath and road resurfacing work at the N65/N52 junction and Birr Road and therefore help to speed up the completion of the remaining improvement works in the town.

Traffic Management/Diversion

1. The revised traffic management plan which has been in operation since Monday 7th September (aimed at facilitating school buses to negotiate the narrow local roads at specific times in the morning and evening and also diverting heavy traffic away from the N52 Birr Road at Riverstown) has been functioning reasonably well. Continuous local traffic diversions are not posted/signed as none of the local roads in the vicinity of Borrisokane are adequate for channeling of higher volumes of traffic.
2. The traffic management plan is being monitored continuously and adjusted, as required, and this will continue until the N52 Birr Road is open again to traffic.
3. The Council is in regular contact with the schools and the bus companies via the schools and the Contractor is also communicating verbally with drivers, when required, where traffic is being diverted at the 3 junctions.

The Council apologises, once again, for the disruption that this is causing and emphasises that we are doing our utmost to get this work completed quickly and safely. We thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any issues please do not hesitate to bring any of your concerns to our Resident Engineering Site Staff.

Yours sincerely,
