Enhancement Works Liberty Square - Thurles October 2021

Update regarding Liberty Square Enhancement Project.

As of today, 12th November, the following works have been progressed –

Phase 2/Phase 3 - Castle to Car Park Entrance/ Car Park Entrance to Slievenamon Road
Phase 2 and 3 are now practically complete.
Works were recently carried out to remove overhead ESB lines and associated poles.
Outstanding works in this area include paving the existing pole areas and planting trees.

Phase 4 -Suirside Place to Ulster Bank Car Park Entrance
Excellent progress has been made on this section of the Square over the past four months.
So much so, that Phase 4 is also practically complete with the exception of tree planting, which is scheduled to take place later this month, November.

Phase 5 - Ulster Bank Car Park to O’Donovan Rossa Street

The contractor is currently carrying out all earthworks in this section in preparation for paving, a section of which has already commenced.
The Ulster bank carpark was closed for a number of weeks during October to enable the entrance to be paved, which has since been completed and the carpark has now reopened to traffic.

Phase 6 - Pedestrian Crossings
The installation of permanent traffic signals at the crossing at Bank of Ireland has now been completed.

Phase 7 - Main Carriageway Resurfacing
Road Surfacing of the main carriageway commenced earlier in this week, week beginning 8th November.
This work is programmed to be completed by the 13th November.
These works are taking place at night time to minimise disruption to traffic .
Tipperary County Council would like to thank the public and retailers for their patience and cooperation throughout the project and particularly now as the first Phase of this Liberty Square Enhancement comes to a close in the next 6 weeks.

Cathaoirleach of Thurles Municipal District Cllr Seamus Hanafin said that
‘After many years of planning we are beginning to near the end of the Liberty Square Enhancement Project. I for one, am looking forward to seeing the finished Square.
The work has caused a huge amount of disruption to both the public and businesses and I want to acknowledge the patience they have shown. I hope that this patience will be rewarded once the project is complete and the town receives the boost that I have no doubt these enhancement works will bring.
