An initiative by Tipperary, Clare and Galway councils to enhance Lough Derg and the tourism offering in the surrounding areas has received a major tourism industry award.

The Lough Derg Marketing Group received the award for best ‘Local Authority Innovation’ at the Irish Tourism Industry Awards ceremony at the Clayton Hotel in Dublin on Friday, February 3rd.
The Irish Tourist Industry Confederation (ITIC), the umbrella group for the tourism industry in Ireland, organises the awards, along with Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland, two of its industry members.
Known as the ITIAS, the awards are seen as the Irish tourism sector’s version of the Oscars. The awards are a national scheme that identifies and honours those who are making a major difference in the tourism industry.

ITIC designed the awards to reward innovation in tourism, significant initiatives at home and overseas and the best examples of improvement to the tourism experience.

The Lough Derg Marketing Group has successfully developed the Lough Derg area as a tourist destination.

Despite facing a very strong and competitive field, the awards ultimately identified The Lough Derg Marketing Group as a worthy winner in the ‘local authority innovation’ section.
Minister of State for Tourism Shane Ross TD gave the award to The Lough Derg Marketing Group at the gala event in Dublin.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Minister Ross said: “This award is recognition of the great work has been undertaken by the Lough Derg Marketing Group to ensure that Lough Derg is a haven for tourists. The Group have worked exceptionally hard to market the surrounding areas and to date have created a promotional video and website, developed and launched an app and organised live lakeside broadcasts. They should be very proud of all they that they have achieved in promoting Lough Derg as a tourist destination. ”

Adjudication on the awards was carried out by an independent panel of experts, chaired by Maurice Pratt, the Chairman of the Uniphar Group and including Noirin Hegarty, Operations Director from Lonely Planet; Philip Browne, Chief Executive of the IRFU; Simon McKeever, Chief Executive, the Irish Exporters’ Association and Marian O’Gorman, Chief Executive, the Kilkenny Group.

Speaking at the event, Eoghan O’Mara-Walsh, Chief Executive of the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation said: “This award validates all of the incredible work The Lough Derg Marketing Group have put in in recent years to market Lough Derg as a tourist attraction. ITIC and its members believe that marketing of tourist destinations is hugely important and we commend the group’s efforts in ensuring that Lough Derg is seen as a must-visit attraction in Tipperary, Clare and Galway. ITIC hopes that this award will further enhance Lough Derg as one of Ireland’s best tourist attractions.”
