River Ara Walkway Project, Tipperary Town

PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT ACT 2000, AS AMENDED
NOTICE OF PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
SECTION 177 AE OF THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
ACT 2000, AS AMENDED
ARTICLE 249 OF THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
REGULATIONS 2001, AS AMENDED

Tipperary County Council proposes to carry out the following development located in the
townlands of Collegeland and Knockanrawley, Tipperary Town, Co. Tipperary.
The development will include the ecological reanimation of approximately 1km of the Ara
River, enhancement and stabilisation works to its main channel and the creation of a variety
of associated habitat features. The main purpose of this work is to appropriately enhance the
environmental conditions of the site, optimising its location for amenity and education.
The development will include:
• A gravelled walkway, circa 1km in length, located parallel with the existing river channel
and connecting it to the existing path near Glenview;
• An off-stream wetland and boardwalk through the wetland;
• In-stream rubble mats and deflectors and river observation point, providing visitors with
visual access of aquatic habitats;
• Landscaping, with appropriate vegetation, children’s play area, community event areas
will further enhance the biodiversity, recreational, social and aesthetic value of the
development area;
• A new pedestrian bridge will provide enhanced access with security provided by
appropriate fencing along school boundary.
Pursuant to Section 177 AE (4)(a) of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended,
and Article 249 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, as amended, take note
that Tipperary County Council proposes to seek the approval of An Bord Pleanála for the
proposed development.
A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) has been prepared in respect of the proposed development
and a copy of NIS may be inspected free of charge or purchased during the period from
Monday, 10th February 2020 to Monday 30th March 2020 during the opening hours of 9.30am
to 4.30pm Monday to Friday excluding public holidays at the following locations:

Submissions and observations relating to—
(I) the implications of the proposed development for proper planning and sustainable
development in the area concerned,
(II) the likely effects on the environment of the proposed development, and
(III) the likely significant effects of the proposed development on a European site, if carried
out, can be made to An Bord Pleanála, 64 Marlborough Street, Dublin 1, D01 V902, during the
period from Monday, 10th February 2020 to 5.30pm on Monday, 30th March 2020.
An Bord Pleanála may give approval to the application for development with or without
conditions or may refuse the application for development.
