Tipperary County Council is pleased to announce that the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has approved an additional allocation of €1 million for the Liberty Square Enhancement Works Project.
Tipperary County Council had previously received an allocation of €4.3 million for this regeneration project with a substantial match funding element also provided.
This funding is secured under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).
Tipperary County Council made a follow up submission to the Department in June last year seeking an increased allocation to complete design and construction of further enhancement works at the western end of Liberty Square. This additional funding will now focus on those works.
The next step will be to define the scope of works to suit the funding amount, carry out designs for the Part 8 process and, subject to approval, proceed with final design work, contractor procurement and construction.
The additional funding has been warmly received by local Councillors as a welcome investment for the ongoing revitalisation and regeneration of Thurles town.
This project has evolved and developed over a number of years with invaluable support and input from Thurles Chamber, Thurles Retail Forum, and members of the public through a consultation process which greatly aided the design of the scheme.
Cathaoirleach of Thurles Municipal District, Councillor Noel Coonan states:
I very much welcome the announcement of additional funding for the Thurles District under the Liberty Square Enhancement Project.
I wish to acknowledge the commitment of the Council and the Elected Members to the regeneration of our towns and am confident that the works in Liberty Square can help to make Thurles one of the leading provincial towns in Munster.
Joe MacGrath, CEO Tipperary County Council states:
The approval of additional funding for the Liberty Square Enhancement Works Project further demonstrates the commitment of Thurles Municipal District to support the regeneration and development of towns and villages across the District. The expansion of the Liberty Square project, which this additional funding allows, will benefit businesses and communities in Thurles town at a time when they most need it.
