Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment Regulations require producers and retailers of WEEE to be responsible for the financing of the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE.

It means that consumers of household WEEE are entitled to return the WEEE back Free of Charge, either to retail outlets (under certain conditions) or other authorised facilities, including recycling centres.

Recycling Electrical and Electronic Equipment reduces the impact on natural resources as batteries contain components that can be used again if recovered properly.
Recycling benefits the environment, society, and the economy.

WEEE Recycling Points
All unwanted household electrical items, including batteries and lighting fixtures can brought to your nearest recycling centre for free.
If you are buying any new electrical item in your home, don't forget that you can return your unwanted/old electronic item to the same retailer for FREE.
WEEE IRELAND promote public collection events of WEEE and waste batteries annually.
Any household item with a plug or battery will be accepted at these collection events - from large items such as fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers, to small electrical items such as remote controls.
All waste batteries will be accepted free of charge in shops, just look out for the blue battery boxes in store.

Examples of items that come under the WEEE regulations include anything with a Plug or a Battery e.g.:

• Large and small household appliances – (e.g. washing machines, toasters)
• Computers, Mobile Phones
• Lighting equipment – (e.g. lamps)
• Electrical and electronic tools – (e.g. drills)
• Toys, leisure and sports equipment – (e.g. Electric Train sets)
• Medical devices (with the exception of all implanted and infected products)- (e.g. electronic thermometers)
• Batteries

Each Retailer must:

• Register with WEEE Ireland or with their local authority.

To register with Tipperary County Council, there is an annual fee of €200 per premises.

• Provide free in-store take back of household WEEE
• Ensure that any WEEE collected is delivered to an approved collection facility. Retailers are NO Longer permitted to transport or dispose of their WEEE at Civic Amenity Sites. They Must now organise a collection service from an Authorised WEEE collector. Advice can be obtained from www.weeireland.ie WEEE Ireland can be contacted on 01-2999320
• Ensure that private households are informed of the WEEE take back facilities available to them and that they are encouraged to participate in the separate collection of WEEE.
