Packaging Waste

The Waste Management Packaging Regulations were first introduced in 1997, and are subject to amendment from time to time. The main purpose of the Regulations is to assist Ireland achieve national packaging recovery targets set under EU Directive 94/62/EC.

The European Union (Packaging) Regulations, 2014 came into effect on 21 June 2014. They place obligations on companies (Producers) that place packaging, packaging material or packaged products on the Irish market. All Producers must segregate their packaging waste arising on site into specified waste streams and ensure that it is recycled or recovered by an authorised waste contractor. Producers with a turnover of more than €1m that place more than 10 tonnes per annum of packaging on to the home market (Major Producer) are further obligated to either join Repak or register with their Local Authority (Self Compliance).

Companies Registered as Self Compliers with Tipperary County Council:
At present (December 2015) there are 3 businesses registered as major producers opting for self compliance with Tipperary County Council under the Packaging Regulations:

Paper / Card-board; Plastic Wrap / Plastic; Aluminium; Wood

M & M Walshe Ltd. t/a Rib World; Killenaule Road, Fethard, Co. Tipperary:
Paper / Card-board; Plastic Wrap / Plastic; Wood;

These businesses are obliged to accept packaging waste similar to that in which they place on the Irish market. The packaging materials that can be accepted by the self-compliers is listed in the above table.

Note members of the public must segregate their waste and ensure that it is clean and in suitable condition for recycling/recovery
