Arts and Older People Initiatives

Local authorities may run initiatives for older people to help them access and take part in the arts as artists, audience members, critics and arts workers.

Tipperary Bealtaine Festival

Each year in the month of May, Bealtaine is presented as an annual nationwide festival celebrating the arts and creativity as we age. The festival is an initiative of Age & Opportunity, the national organisation that promotes active and engaged living as we get older.Tipperary Arts Office issued an Open Call to artists to submit proposals for Bealtaine 2023 projects. This Open Call has now closed and we will issue details of our Bealtaine 2023 programme in due course.

Michael Fortune, artist and film maker and collector of folklore, is currently collaborating with the Age Friendly Roscrea group in a project that explores local tradition, folklore and song. The project began with a large group participatory workshop and discussion, where participants were encouraged to share and explore their stories and memories of local heritage and folklore. The aim of the project is to use a variety of mediums to encourage broad participation, empower participants to remember and celebrate the past and inspire community strength. The final showcase will include a screening of various story sessions and a photographic exhibition.
